PD: Grandma gave girl cocaine as part of custody plot

Gilbert, AZ (KPHO) -- Gilbert police arrested a woman Wednesday on suspicion of child abuse after a school resource officer said she provided drugs to her 9-year-old granddaughter.

SanJuanita Carbajal, 58, who has limited custody of the girl, allegedly provided the drugs as part of a plot to have her son-in-law arrested and allow her full custody of her granddaughter, according to a Gilbert police report.

Officials at Pioneer Elementary School in Gilbert called police Monday when they suspected the girl had an illegal substance, according to the report.

A field test on the substance by the resource officer returned a positive test for cocaine, according to the report.

An investigation by the officer and Gilbert detectives led them to believe Carbajal gave several small packets of the drug to the girl with instructions from her grandmother on where to put them in her father's vehicle, and then who to tell at the school about the drugs.

Carbajal was arrested in Phoenix and was booked into Maricopa County Jail on charges of child abuse for placing the minor in danger by providing her the narcotics, according to the report.
