WHITEFISH BAY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office has identified the woman killed as 18-year-old Mariah Hicks.

WHITEFISH BAY, Wis (CBS 58) -- Police are reporting that on Saturday, Dec. 31, 2022, at around 2:47 a.m. near Hampton and Anita Avenues, an 18-year-old woman was shot and killed. 

According to officials, police responded to a report of multiple shots fired. When they arrived on-scene they discovered an 18-year-old woman on the sidewalk with multiple gunshot wounds. 

Per a release, Whitefish Bay police began lifesaving measures, which were continued when North Shore Fire Department staff arrived, but despite their efforts the woman succumbed to her injuries. 

In a statement, officials said this appears to be an isolated incident and there is no ongoing threat to the community. 

What is ongoing, however, is the sadness in the community.

Hal Dessel lives near where it happened and said he and his neighbors are shocked this happened.

"Is everything okay? And he said well no there was a killing, shooting and killing in front of our house last night on Anita," said Dessel. "We both cried, for the sadness of it, and people around here are going to be traumatized."

The investigation into this incident will be a joint effort between Whitefish Bay Police Department, members of the Wisconsin Crime Laboratory and the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office.
