Vaccination events in Madison present both sides of argument

MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Two events with differing views on the issue of vaccinations took place in Madison Wednesday.

One event was an informational hearing put on by Democratic Representative Gordon Hintz.

He discussed the importance of vaccinations and trends in Wisconsin surrounding the issue. Hintz has a bill sitting in committee to eliminate the personal waiver for vaccinations.

"My goal, doesn't have to be my bill, is to try to increase compliance with our vaccinations to make sure we're protecting those people who, again, can't get vaccinated for medical purposes," said Rep. Gordon Hintz (D-Oshkosh).

The other event was put on by the group Wisconsin United for Freedom. They oppose the bill and had speakers discuss why some parents are hesitant about vaccines.

"We do not want to take away your right to vaccinate, but we want you to understand that there are very valid reasons why people choose to delay, to forego altogether, or pick and choose what vaccines they want for their children," said Wisconsin United for Freedom representative Jamie Bernander.

The bill to remove the personal vaccine waiver is unlikely to move forward in the Republican-controlled legislature.
