MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A 23-year-old man died from injuries suffered after he lost control of his car and slammed into a home on Milwaukee's north side.

Neighbors said the home is vacant so no one inside was hurt.

Nevaeh Kennedy said, "I was sitting down and all of a sudden I heard 'BOOM'!"

Kennedy was just feet away when the SUV slammed into the neighboring house Sunday morning at about 10 a.m. Neighbors down the block and across the street said they could feel their homes shake from the impact of the crash.

MPD said the SUV was one of two cars speeding together down 60th.

As they approached Capitol, an oncoming car was trying to turn. The driver of the SUV swerved and lost control.

Down the block, the car crossed the median, jumped the curb then narrowly missed one house before bouncing off a tree and spinning into the corner of a brick home.

Kennedy said, "People were pulling over to see if the person was ok, and the person was not ok."

The sheer force of the crash crumbled the entire front brick façade of the home.

People rushed over to try and help the driver before emergency crews arrived, but they said he was trapped and it was apparent he was already dead.

Kennedy said, "There was nothing we could do because the person was actually stuck inside the car. And we didn't know if the person could hear us or not. So we automatically assumed the person was dead because of the accident."

Witnesses said the 23-year-old had to be cut from the car. MPD said he died at the scene.

The crash also destroyed a gas meter at the home. For a time, there were concerns of a gas leak.

The car was eventually towed away at about 3 in the afternoon.

MPD said the 44-year-old driver of the car that was speeding alongside the 23-year-old was taken into custody, and charges are pending review by the Milwaukee County DA's Office.
