One hospitalized after serious ATV crash near Beaver Dam

CALAMUS, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A 49-year-old man is in a Madison hospital after a serious ATV crash Saturday evening, Sept. 12.

Officials say it happened on Ridge Road near Jackson Street in the township of Calamus in Dodge County. It is a little over a mile southwest of Beaver Dam.

Around 5:30 p.m., a report of an ATV crashed in the roadway was reported to 911. Police say they found the victim unresponsive with potentially life-threatening injuries.

According to police, the ATV was southbound on Ridge Road and lost control and overturned, ejecting the lone occupant.

The man was transported to a nearby hospital and later transferred to a hospital in Madison. His current status is not known.

Police say the crash investigation remains open, but lack of helmet use is a factor in the significance of the injuries.

"In addition, responding to the scene and assisting in the investigation were Conservation Wardens from the WI Department of Natural Resources (DNR), WI State Patrol Technical Reconstruction Unit (TRU), City of Beaver Dam Police Department, and Beaver Dam Fire and Rescue. A medical helicopter was requested, but unavailable to fly due to weather conditions at the time of the request," a news release stated.
