Officials: Milwaukee woman charged in east side hit-and-run crash that left man in coma
Milwaukee Police Department/Milwaukee County Courts MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A 24-year-old Milwaukee woman is facing charges in connection to a hit-and-run that left a man in a coma.
Jenni Fischer is facing the following charges:
- Hit-and-run - great bodily harm
- Prepare or make fraudulent insurance claims
The crash happened Monday, Dec. 1, near Juneau and Van Buren. Officials say around 8:40 p.m., a silver SUV traveling southbound struck a person who had just exited their vehicle. The SUV fled the scene.
Based on surveillance footage and vehicle debris left at the scene, police believed the SUV was a 2017-2024 Jeep Compass Latitude with significant damage to the front passenger side.
According to a criminal complaint, surveillance video captured the crash on Van Buren Street. The video reportedly shows the silver SUV striking the victim as he was helping unload luggage from the back of a car. The victim's driver side door was mangled and crushed backwards toward the front fender, the complaint says.
Following the crash, Fischer reportedly filed a false police report and false insurance claim on her damaged vehicle. She allegedly wrote in the incident report, "I was at work and when I left and got to my car the front right side was smashed. Windshield cracked and mirror broken."
Information from the false claim led investigators to believe Fischer was behind the wheel when the hit-and-run crash occurred.
Authorities arrested Fischer at her parents' house on Dec. 7.
