Officer goes above and beyond call of duty

 RACINE -A police officer went above and beyond the call of duty to help an elderly dementia patient early Tuesday morning. Officer Christine Forsman was patrolling near 10th and Main at 3:30AM when she spotted a car parked in the middle of the intersection. The vehicle had Illinois plates. The officer went to the car and asked the 71 year old driver if she ws okay. The woman said she was looking for a gas station and thought there was one nearby.  The woman thought she was in Champaign, Illinois where she lives. The woman told the officer she had been driving around since 1:00PM Monday. The woman was not dressed for the extreme weather and her car was on fumes. Officer Forsman had the woman follow her to a 24 hour gas station, but on the way found out the woman had done this same thing last month and was suffering from dementia. Officer Forsman brought her to the police station and took care of her. The officer also contacted Racine Human Services who temporarily placed her in a group home for dementia patients until she can return home. Human Services will work with Illinois officials to set up a support system for her in Champaign so something like this doesn't happen again. Officer Forsman has even offered to drive the woman back to Illinois when she's ready to go home.
