North Avenue construction gets started in Wauwatosa

WAUWATOSA -- After years of swaying for left-hand turns, drivers along North Avenue in Wauwatosa are looking forward to enjoying a straight shot down the popular roadway.  But they'll have to put up with months of construction first.

It's a big project to basically revamp North Avenue.  Work started Monday morning in Wauwatosa.

The work is supposed to last through September.

There's a lot of work to get done.  Plans include moving some utilities, adding bike lanes, and as mike mentioned the removal of the swaying or the cicane effect while driving.

The familiar orange barrels will be all across North Avenue for the next few months.

The work will focus on the section of North Avenue from 60th to Wauwatosa Avenue.

Alderman Joel Tilleson was a leader on this project - and thinks although there will be some headaches - this will help attract people to Wauwatosa.

\"People are very positive,\" Tilleson said.  \"They're happy to see the removal of the left turn lanes and the cicanes. They're happy to see the addition of the bike lanes. I think people are going to grant us the patience we hope they do and see this project through.\"

CBS 58 did speak with a business owner who's dealing with the construction now.  She says it's not fun to have it going on now, but thinks it'll make the area more desirable in the long run.
