NFL Draft Round 1: Packers select wide receiver Matthew Golden

NFL

GREEN BAY, Wis. (CBS 58) -– For the first-ever NFL Draft in Green Bay, Packers fans were filled with anticipation for who the team will take.

Per usual, the pleas for a wide receiver were there for the Packers to pick at 23rd overall.

The Packers' last first round wide receiver was in 2002 when the Packers selected Javon Walker.

In 2025, the Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst made fans happy by going with wide receiver Matthew Golden from Texas.

Golden is a junior and played for both the Longhorns and Houston in his collegiate career. Helping Texas reach the College Football Semifinals, Golden amassed 58 catches, 987 receiving yards, and 9 touchdowns. Golden also has special teams experience as the Longhorns primary kick returner with 285 return yards on 14 tries.

Golden was one of the Packers pre-draft visits.

"I had a good relationship with them when I came up for a visit. I got around the coaching staff and I enjoyed it," said Golden. "It's always been a dream of mine to go in the first round. To know that they haven't picked a receiver in the first round since 2002. It's truly a blessing."

The Packers have two picks on Day 2, which is Friday, April 25, at No. 54 overall and No. 87 overall in the second and third round, respectively.
