MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) — The streets of Riverwest were quiet Wednesday afternoon, but inside the Jazz Gallery Center for the Arts, music filled the room.

For jazz musicians and supporters in Milwaukee, the sound represents more than a performance. It represents part of the city's culture and history.

Now, a new free web app is helping more people find where that music is happening.

Lilly Talbot, a jazz musician and Jazz Unlimited of Greater Milwaukee scholarship recipient, said performing jazz brings her joy and allows her to connect with others.

“I just love doing it, so I’m always very joyful when I’m playing, and I try to make other people feel that way too,” Talbot said.

The new app, MKE JAZZ.LIVE, was created to help fans find live jazz performances across Milwaukee.

App creator Ignacio Catral said Milwaukee has a strong jazz community, but finding performances can be difficult.

“The Milwaukee jazz scene is spectacular. We have some world-class players. One of the hard things to do is to find when and where they’re playing,” Catral said.

The free web app tracks shows at dozens of venues, helping fans discover performances and plan when they want to hear live music.

Catral said the goal is to make it easier for both fans and musicians to connect.

“We wanted to make it easier for fans to find who’s playing where and for musicians to be able to list their shows and get exposure that way,” Catral said.

“They can plan ahead, they can filter for the weekend, they can filter for the month, they can look for a specific date,” Catral added.

For Talbot, the app creates more opportunities for young musicians and listeners to stay connected with the local jazz scene.

“It’s really great for me as a student because I’m always looking for opportunities to listen and listen locally,” Talbot said.

Talbot said jazz carries a history that continues to inspire new generations.

“Jazz is really an important expression of emotion, and it’s a way of life. It’s so deeply rooted in history that I went to New Orleans to research it and hear where it came from. So, to me, jazz is life,” Talbot said.
