New Milwaukee County senior center sites to provide programming formerly offered at McGovern Park

CBS 58

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Last August, the historic flood that swamped Milwaukee prompted the closing of McGovern Park Senior Center. It was a move that generated protests from seniors who took advantage of those programs.

Wednesday, county officials announced two locations on Milwaukee's northwest side that will provide programming for older adults who used to go to McGovern Park.

One is the Embassy Center at Sherman and Fond du Lac in Milwaukee. The other is the Havenwoods State Forest Nature Center on N. Hopkins, very close to the old McGovern Park center.

A variety of programs for seniors will be offered at these locations, including movie afternoons, cards and games, quilting and sewing, bingo, walking groups, nutrition programs, and more.

Hours of operation are:

  • Embassy Center (3725 N. Sherman Blvd., Milwaukee, WI 53216)
    • Open 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays beginning June 29

  • Havenwoods State Forest Nature Center (6141 N. Hopkins St., Milwaukee, WI 53209)
    • Open 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning June 23

“While the closure of the McGovern Senior Center following last year's historic flooding has been incredibly difficult for the older adults who relied on that space, Milwaukee County remains committed to ensuring they continue to have access to the programs, services, and community connections they deserve,” said County Executive David Crowley. “I am proud we are opening these new locations that will help us maintain critical programming while we work toward a long-term solution that supports healthy aging and improves the quality of life for seniors and older adults on Milwaukee County’s northwest side. I want to thank our partners, staff, and the older adults who have shown patience, creativity, and resilience throughout this transition.”

Anyone 50 years old or older is welcome.
