Neighbors on high alert after home invasion, deadly shootings in Kewaskum
WASHINGTON COUNTY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Investigators in Washington County are working to pin down what led up to a deadly home invasion Wednesday, Feb. 3.
Three people were left dead in the town of Kewaskum, including the suspect.
"We've known these people for a long time," said neighbor Jeff Waala.
Jeff Waala lives across the street from where sheriff's officials found one person shot to death.
"My wife used to babysit for their sons 40 years ago," said Waala.
Earlier Thursday, Feb. 4, Waala said he watched sheriff's deputies sift through the snow near 81st and Forest View Road. They were looking for any evidence tied to the deadly shooting.
Just before 3 p.m. Wednesday, a 911 caller reported they heard gunshots and saw an armed person walking toward their home.
When police arrived, there was a shootout between the suspect and deputies. Officials set up a drone and found the suspect dead. A gun was also found nearby.
Shortly after, officials learned two people were shot dead at two different homes.
"Nobody deserves to go through that," Waala said.
Waala said in the midst of the shooting incident, a woman was carjacked by the suspect.
"She ran through behind our house over to the neighbors," said Waala.
After talking to neighbors, they are now on high alert.
"It does go to show you that you have to be prepared to protect yourself," said Waala.
