Near-drowning at Shorewood's Atwater Beach: Woman taken to area hospital

SHOREWOOD, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A 32-year-old woman was rescued from Lake Michigan Monday, Sept. 4, after a near-drowning at Shorewood's Atwater Beach.

According to North Shore Fire/Rescue, first responders located the woman lying on the breakwall after going underwater "for a period of time." Officials say she'd been removed from the water with the help of bystanders.

The woman was then taken to shore using a rescue raft, and to the top of the bluff using the fire department's utility terrain vehicle before being transported to Columbia St. Mary's Milwaukee hospital for treatment.

The fire department says the woman was conscious and breathing at the time of transport.
