MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) — There's a new mayor in Milwaukee — but she won't be running City Hall.

Molson Coors crowned Janelle Jajtner the ceremonial mayor of the "Champagne of Beers Region" on Saturday, celebrating a designation the Milwaukee Common Council gave to a portion of Miller Valley along State Street in 2021.

More than 300 people applied for the honorary position after Molson Coors opened the search to Milwaukee residents.

For Jajtner, the role carries a personal connection. Her father worked at the brewery, and she said the familiar Miller presence throughout Milwaukee brings back memories of her family's ties to the company and the city.

"Even today, seeing the Miller sign around Milwaukee brings back those memories and reminds me how connected my family is to this city and this brand," Jajtner said. "There we go, I'm the mayor!"

Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson joined Saturday's celebration and presented Jajtner with a sash and champagne-colored mayoral jacket.

The Champagne of Beers Region pays tribute to Miller High Life, the Milwaukee-born beer that has long used the "Champagne of Beers" nickname.

For Jajtner, the honorary title now gives her a chance to represent both Milwaukee and a brand that has been part of her family's history.
