National Guard Unit Gets Send off In West Bend

It's the moment all military families prepare for; that time to put on a brave face while a loved one heads out for deployment.

We've seen Wisconsin National Guard troops go through this many times before and yet the gravity of the moment never fades.

Thursday in West Bend, there were prayers, hugs and encouraging words as 35 member of the Wisconsin National Guard get ready to go to Afghanistan as part of "Operation Freedom Sentinel."

They are company C, 1st battalion, 168th aviation.

An additional 65 Madison based guardsmen are also being deployed.

The Governor noted that the families left state side also serve in their own way.

"One of the best things you can do for your family members is take advantage of the support that's available here," said Governor Walker. "So they have to worry about what's happening at home."

The Wisconsin based service men and women anticipate being heavily involved in aerial medical evacuations.
