MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Since its inception in 1987, National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) has been dedicated to honoring the progress made toward equality in athletics.
An event was held Wednesday, Feb. 4, at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM), with hopes to inspire the next generation of female athletes.
Attendees learned about topics such as gender equality in athletics, and the importance for health and fitness.
One organizer thinks the day is a great way to learn about the industry whether it's a career on the court or in an office.
"We want to ensure that we give them as much exposure as possible even if you are not an athlete and feel like I can't play sports, but you love math, you can be an analyst, finding different ways to really ensure that girls know they belong in sports and in this business," said Ebony Haynes, manager of equality and inclusion, Milwaukee Public Schools.
Over 300 students from 15 different MPS schools were in attendance for this year's event.
