'My stance on Israel stays': Mequon Congressional candidate defends words after arrest for altercation that included antisemitic comments
Contributed MEQUON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A longshot candidate for Congress was arrested in Mequon Thursday morning, October 8.
Mequon police said there was an alleged road rage incident, then an altercation at a gas station, and it was captured on camera.
Matthew Arndt is a Green Party candidate for Wisconsin's 6th Congressional seat.
A driver posted video of Arndt screaming and swearing at him about Israel.
We spoke with Arndt, who is standing by his comments.
Arndt was arrested for disorderly conduct with a hate crime enhancer.
He would not say what happened on the road that led to the antisemitic outburst.
But he said he's standing by what he said, and the Green Party is standing by him.
In the video, the other driver asks, "Do you want to tell me something?"
Arndt responded, "Yeah, you're a f****** piece of s*** traitor."
The unseen driver followed Arndt's car into the gas station parking lot.
A child could be heard in that car earlier in the video.
Almost immediately, Arndt started yelling at the driver.
"Go post it on f****** social media. I'm running for Congress here in the 6th district and f*** Israel. Go f*** yourself." He later said, "F*** the Israel lobby. And f*** the neo-cons."
Arndt made it clear what he's running for and who he is: "Free Palestine! Matthew Arndt. Free Palestine!"
He berated the driver for nearly a minute, saying, "The whole country's against you, you piece of s***."
And when he was asked, "You're running for Congress?" He said, "Yeah. You're a piece of s***."
Mequon police said the interaction resulted from alleged dangerous driving, but that was not captured on the video.
We spoke with Arndt Thursday evening outside his Mequon home.
When we asked what happened, he said, "I'm not going to comment on what happened. You see what happened in the video that gentleman posted."
He refused to say what happened on the road to prompt the interaction or his anger. "All I'm going to say," Arndt said, "is I could have used a better choice of words. But my stance on Israel stays."
Arndt said the other driver filed a police report right away and then he went in to speak with police.
He told us, "I am not anti-anyone. I am anti-Israel. I am anti-Zionists."
Arndt said his actions do not represent the Green Party. But a party official stood off camera during the interview, telling us after the party does still support him.
Arndt said, "There will be people who vote against me and there will be people who vote for me based on this."
The Milwaukee Jewish Federation condemned what it called "hateful and intimidating behavior," saying in a statement: "The First Amendment protects free speech, not unlawful harassment or threats."
Arndt defended his First Amendment rights. He also said he's capable of representing all constituents if he were to be elected, saying, "If I were to become elected, I will represent the people of my district, no matter their religious background, no matter their ethnic background."
Public polling data is unavailable for the 6th Congressional district race.
Incumbent Glenn Grothman won the Republican primary with more than 63,000 votes. Bradley Smith won the Democratic primary with more than 36,000 votes.
Arndt won the Green Party's primary with 62 votes.
