MUSKEGO, WI (CBS 58) - Southeast Wisconsin is no stranger to dominant high school programs. Muskego girls' soccer is aiming for its fourth straight state championship.
In the history of the WIAA, only Brookfield Central and Catholic Memorial girls' soccer teams have accomplished that.
Muskego head coach Lance Matthews makes it clear that the building blocks of what's on this field now, started well before he took over.
"The foundation really came from Eric Hess who was the head coach before me," said Lance Matthews, in his 14th year with Muskego, and sixth as head coach. "We made it to state a few times and were outgunned but got the experience, but the girls were then hungry for more."
After not winning a game at state in five trips, since 2019 the Warriors are 8-0 with four state championships.
"I remember going to their first state game as a little girl and it was incredible, I wished I could be there and here I am," said Klara Muench, senior defensive midfielder.
Aspiration has become reality, but the Warriors never get ahead of themselves.
"A lot of people ask us, are you going to win again? And we have to tell them we take it one day at a time, one game at a time, one practice. We just have to be in the mindset that this is a new year. Need new people to step up," said Muench.
A part of the process is being challenged each and every week.
"We talk about the pressures. Pressure is a privilege that these girls get to face every day," said Matthews. "They play the Arrowheads; they play the Whitefish Bays. We play a tough schedule so that we find adversity early."
"Matthews sets us up for success every single year," said Jessica Fernau, a senior forward committed to Ball State. "The training, the fitness. Everything in between the big games, the little games, he prepares us, and he sets the standard so we can reach the expectations that are set for us."
Like any great team, the Warriors do it all together.
"The energy of this team is so different. I have teammates from club; I have teammates from other clubs. I'm friends with everyone here," said Fernau. "What we do outside of practice, that makes us so strong."
"All of us are super close on this team, all of them are my best friends," said Muench. "Energy is always up, I can't describe it. It's amazing being here every day."
Muskego takes on Milwaukee Regan at 4pm on Saturday, June 7th. If the Warriors return to state, the final weekend takes place at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee staring on June 19th.
