MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Leaders with Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) on Thursday, Oct. 16, joined forces with the Milwaukee Teachers Education Association (MTEA) as they continue their push to bring retired teachers back to MPS.
The initiative comes as the district is trying to fill 90 teaching vacancies across several schools.
The district says they are open to teachers coming back in either full-time, part-time, or even shared-job roles where the retiree has the opportunity to share the teaching responsibilities with a fellow retiree.
The district encourages retirees to apply for any position however, the greatest needs are in art, middle school grades, music, physical education and special education.
"Your decision to return to the classroom is more than a gesture. It's an act of love for our students and for Milwaukee's future," said James Ferguson, MPS school board director.
The offer to retired teachers applies to anyone who worked previously with Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) or any other Wisconsin school district.
