MPS to consider legal action over lead paint cleanup costs in special board meeting

CBS 58

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) could move closer to a lawsuit over the city's lead paint crisis.

The school board will meet privately with lawyers Tuesday night, Feb. 10, to decide whether paint companies should be held responsible for the nearly $43 million spent cleaning lead from nearly 100 schools.

Nine schools closed last year after high lead levels were found, prompting MPS to clean every school built before 1978.

In December, district and city leaders announced cleanup efforts were officially complete.

Tuesday night's meeting will take place at 5:30 p.m. There will be no public comment.
