17-year-old in stolen vehicle killed after crashing during pursuit with police
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee Police are investigating a fatal crash that occurred late Monday, Feb. 27, during which a police pursuit of an armed robbery suspect vehicle resulted in a deadly collision.
A statement released by the Milwaukee Police Department on Tuesday, Feb. 28 says at approximately 11:38 p.m. on Monday at W. Atkinson and N. 11th St.
Officials say that MPD officers observed a vehicle that was taken in an armed robbery travelling on N. 15th Street before attempting to stop the vehicle; however, the driver refused, and a pursuit ensued.
During the chase, the officers report to have "self-terminated the pursuit due to equipment malfunction." However, another squad observed the vehicle on N. Teutonia Ave. and W. Burleigh St. and reinitiated the pursuit.
The pursuit ended when the suspect vehicle reportedly disregarded the flashing red lights and collided with another vehicle.
The driver of the suspect vehicle, a 17-year-old Milwaukee male, had to be extricated from the vehicle. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries. He later succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday, Feb. 28 at approximately 7:45 a.m.
An occupant in that vehicle, a 17-year-old Milwaukee female, was transported to a local hospital for treatment of serious injuries. She is reported to be in stable condition and was arrested.
The driver of the other vehicle, a 21-year-old Milwaukee man, was transported to a local hospital for treatment of serious injuries. Officials say he is in stable condition.
Criminal charges will be referred to the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office are pending. Police say the investigation into the fatal crash is ongoing.
