MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) ---  Milwaukee Common Council President Cavalier Johnson is bringing attention to the importance of gun safety after a 2-year-old boy was shot near 83rd and Glen while in the care of his father Friday, Jan. 22.

In a statement by Johnson on Monday, Jan. 25, Johnson said the 2-year-old-boy was taken to the hospital after suffering a gunshot wound to the hand. The statement says the boy is in stable condition and the event was non-life threatening. It is believed the incident was self-inflicted.

"(It) presents a sobering reminder of the importance of gun safety for those who choose to exercise their Second Amendment right," Johnson said. "Gun safety best practices call for making sure your gun is unloaded at all times unless it is in use, storing it in a locked, secure location away from children, and place the ammunition in a locked, secure location separate from the gun."

Free gun locks can be obtained at most Milwaukee Police Department district stations, Milwaukee fire stations, or by contacting the City's Office of Violence Prevention at 414-286-8553.

"Gun locks can save lives, and should be a staple of responsible gun ownership," Johnson said. "I encourage those in need to utilize one of the many free options available."

The father of the 2-year-old was taken into custody and police say criminal charges will be referred to the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office in the upcoming days.

The investigation is ongoing.
