Mother Charged With Murder In Baby's Death from Meth Overdose

MANCHESTER, Tenn. (NEWSCHANNEL5)  - A Coffee County woman has been arrested and charged with second degree murder in the death of her newborn.

Officials said 29-year-old Brittany Evans allegedly used meth while pregnant and a short time before the birth of her baby in April 2015.

According to District Attorney Craig Northcott, the baby coded within minutes of being born and passed away within an hour of a meth overdose.

Evans has also been charged with two counts of aggravated assault, along with the second degree murder charge.

Northcott said he believes it’s the first time this type of charge has been used in the state of Tennessee.

Evans was being held in the Coffee County Jail on a $50,000 bond.
