Your favorite Disney characters skate into Milwaukee this weekend
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Ahead of June 19, the Milwaukee VA held celebrations for Juneteenth on Wednesday, June 5, at their Milwaukee campus.
The first-of-it's kind event honors the veterans who fought to emancipate slaves during the civil war.
Speakers discussed the history of the holiday and Black liberation, and it featured live music with traditional drums, dancing, as well as free food from local vendors.
One of the organizers of today's event says all Juneteenth events this month are for everyone to enjoy.
"It's welcome to everyone and every group, it's not just African Americans, it's for everyone to come enjoy this holiday and to come enjoy Juneteenth Day," said Shan LaBrew Owens, Commander, LaBrew Troopers and Veterans Services.
LaBrew is the co-chair of the Veterans Zone at the Juneteenth celebrations in Milwaukee this year, and he encourages all veterans to come out and enjoy the national holiday.
