Milwaukee Public Safety and Health Committee discussing conversion therapy in Thursday meeting

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- At Thursday's Public Safety and Health Committee meeting the issue of conversion therapy will be brought up.

Alderman Cavalier Johnson has sponsored a resolution making conversion therapy, the practice of trying to change a person’s sexual orientation and also known as reparative therapy, illegal in the City of Milwaukee.

“Conversion therapy is scientifically unfounded and has been refuted by virtually every major medical and psychological organization in the United States,” Alderman Johnson said. “The practice is often conducted in a violent and damaging manner and has been found to cause harmful effects including depression, suicidality, and substance abuse.”
