Milwaukee Police found the Red Acura used in the hit and run just a few blocks away from where Israel Soto-Colon, 61, was killed Tuesday afternoon.
According to the medical examiner, his family said that he was picking up a child from school. When he walked across the street, one person ran a red light. Witnesses said Soto-Colon pushed the child out of the way and he was hit.
He died at the scene. The Medical Examiner's Office said the car was traveling at a high rate of speed when it hit Soto-Colon.
Police found the car a few blocks from the accident on 30th Street. People in the area said they had never seen the car before.
According to Alderman Bob Donovan, this is the eighth fatal hit and run that has happened this year.
“We need a higher level of traffic enforcement from our police department. If we need more resources than we need to hear from them indicating that we need more resources," said Alderman Bob Donovan.
Donovan said he has reached out to Milwaukee Police to find out ways to improve traffic safety in Milwaukee.
The Medical Examiner's Office said Soto-Colon died from traumatic injuries from the accident. Police have arrested the owner of the car for an outstanding warrant but the department has not confirmed if that person is a suspect.
