Milwaukee Police Department to renew contract with Flock

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Milwaukee Police Department intends to renew its contract with Flock, an automated license plate reader, the department confirmed Wednesday, Oct. 7.

In a statement, the police department said in part:

"The contract will be renewed at the appropriate time to ensure continuity of service and to maintain the investigative and public safety benefits the system provides."

Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson and the Milwaukee Police Department announced back in August, commitments to change the city's use of Flock cameras after the mayor's office described instances of the technology being misused locally and nationally.

Among the changes noted in a statement from MPD is only allowing supervisors to access the Flock system. Also, a new dashboard that tracks how Flock is being used by the department has reportedly been integrated.

The statement from the police department goes on to say:

"MPD is committed to strict oversight and accountability in the use of this technology. As such, the Department has established strong policies governing data access, retention, and audit processes, and conduct regular reviews to ensure compliance with legal standards and community expectations. These safeguards help ensure the system continues to be used responsibly, transparently, and solely in support of our public safety mission."

This decision comes on the heels of the arrests of two MPD officers who have been accused of abusing the Flock system for personal use, as well as the sheriff's offices in Racine and Fond du Lac counties discontinuing their agreements with Flock.
