MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Sandy Donnell recorded the tense moments between a 23-year-old man and Wauwatosa police officers from her bedroom window early this morning.

"You could hear the police trying to get out of the car and put his hands up,” said Donnell.

Police say it started around 12:30 when officers tried to stop a stolen SUV near Hampton and Capitol.

The car took off and police chased. They laid down stop sticks that brought the chase to an end near 85th and Concordia.

That's when the suspect got out and started shooting at officers.

"Very afraid because our window, our bedroom was right there and I heard like 10,20 shots, and I wasn't sure where they were coming from,” Donnell said. “I'm woken out of a sleep so all you can do is get on the ground and that's what we did."

Officers shot back at the suspect, hitting him twice. He survived.

Bullets also hit homes and the squad car.

Police tell us the suspect is a Milwaukee man with a lengthy arrest record.

"I don't know why people would come out here and shoot up the neighborhood like that," said neighbor Carl Duncan.

"I guess you hear about this stuff more and more. Not here but in other areas. Definitely glad the police were on top of it. They seem to have things pretty much under control most of the time,” said neighbor Dan Wood.

There were three others in the car with the suspect, a 19-year-old female passenger was also hurt but will recover.

Police say the car the suspect was driving was stolen from Milwaukee last week.

The officers involved are on paid leave per policy.
