Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson to hold 'State of the City' address Monday in BMO Pavilion
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson will hold his "State of the City" address on Monday, July 26 inside of the BMO Pavilion on the Summerfest grounds.
On Sunday, the mayor rehearsed in the open-air venue that holds 5,000 guests.
“Tomorrow during the State of the City speech, we’ll really hit on this theme of one Milwaukee," Johnson told CBS 58's Ellie Nakamoto-White.
According to Johnson, that term means lifting Milwaukee up while creating a safer city.
“You know talking about the successes, talking about some of our challenges, talking about our ability to come together and build a city that everybody can be proud of," Johnson said.
Topics in Monday's speech will include the city's fiscal situation, economic improvements, and other new initiatives.
“We take on the challenges that are critical to Milwaukee’s future growth and development. We take on the challenges that are central to our public safety concerns. We take on the challenges that are central to our ability to sustainably and fiscally support our city government," Johnson said.
When asked about increasing public safety concerns, Johnson said he "shares people's concerns" surrounding gun violence in Milwaukee.
“We’ve seen a reduction in homicides but still there are too many people who end up shot, either fatally or non-fatally and we’ve got to work on that," Johnson said.
Ultimately, Johnson said while the city has seen successes over the last year, there needs to be a collective effort from city leaders and community members alike if we want to see a better future.
“I want them to feel that we’re all a part of the same team," Johnson said. "That we truly are one Milwaukee."
The address will start at 4 p.m. and attendees are asked to arrive about 30 minutes before.
Around 800 people have already RSVP'd.
