Milwaukee man charged in wrong-way OWI crash that left unborn child dead

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A 39-year-old Milwaukee man has been charged in connection with a wrong-way crash that seriously injured a pregnant woman and caused the death of her unborn child, according to the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office said the crash happened around 4:24 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 26 when a deputy traveling north on I-43 near the Marquette Interchange was passed by a vehicle driving the wrong way.

The driver, identified as Jorge Alvarez Mathuzima, was reportedly traveling south in the northbound lanes when his SUV struck another vehicle near Greenfield Ave., causing it to roll over and catch fire.

According to the sheriff’s office, deputies pulled the 33-year-old woman from the burning vehicle. She suffered multiple injuries and was taken to a hospital, where she later learned her unborn child had died.

Body camera footage captured the aftermath of the wrong-way crash. 


Mathuzima’s blood alcohol concentration was 0.1569, nearly twice the legal limit, according to the sheriff’s office.

He faces three felony charges, including first-degree reckless homicide of an unborn child and homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle.
