MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee made the top three list of best places to visit, only to be beat by San Diego and Chicago. Visit Milwaukee says this is a huge honor and puts the city on the map to become a top destination for business and leisure travel.

"We were so thrilled to be voted by over half a million readers of Conde Nast Traveler the third best large city in the U.S," said Claire Koenig, Senior Director of Communications and Public Affairs with Visit Milwaukee.

Koenig says this new recognition shows the growing demand for travel to Milwaukee, which in the long run helps the city itself grow.

"Someone who might read about us in Conde Nast Traveler or maybe see us on their Instagram channels or see one of our restaurants being promoted by a Top Chef judge for example, it's the best way to discover the city," said Koenig.

This is not the only recognition Milwaukee has earned recently. The city was also named one of National Geographic's 25 Best Places to Travel and landed a spot on the New York Times' 52 Places for a Changed World.

Visit Milwaukee says that, along with being chosen as a political convention destination, brings economic impact.

"Highlighting all of that doesn't mean we're ignoring the challenges that we have, and you can have both and then you can also highlight the thousands of people whose job it is to try and address those challenges and make the city better," said Koenig.

Milwaukee is Wisconsin's largest tourism market and accounts for more than 25% of tourism's economic impact to the state.
