Milwaukee Juneau wins the Division 4 state title against Cambridge
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Five area teams played for four championships in four different classes; Milwaukee Juneau played in its first ever state tournament taking on Cambridge looking to end a 22-year drought for Milwaukee Public Schools.
Toree Johnson Jr. had plenty to clap about in his first year from the team, especially his son, Dooney Johnson.
Dooney was a one-man wrecking crew in the first half with 17 points in 18 minutes.
The Gonzaga committed with a team high of 23 points, seven rebounds and four blocks. The pioneers trailed at the half but then Jaden Hardiman cleared for takeoff in the second half with 13 of his 17 coming in the final five minutes of the game.
With this Junea ends the 22-year drought, becoming the first school in the Milwaukee Public School system to win a state championship since 2004.
"We can do anything we put our minds to. They counted us out from the beginning," said Dooney Johnson. "Since the beginning of the season, we stuck to it, we stuck to the plan and we finished it out strong."
"Been watching these kids for a long time and they been working really hard to get to this moment and also to be able to do it with my son at my alma mater very special moment," said Torre Johnson Jr.
In the Division 3, Racine Saint Caterine's took on Seymour. Hometown athlete LaMont Hamilton saved his best for last with 26 points in the championship game.
