MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Rising rent and an expensive and volatile housing market further highlight the need for safe, affordable housing. But the cost of buying a house remains a big obstacle, especially for low-income households.
There's where Milwaukee's Housing Trust Fund comes in. It provides grants and loans to help build or rehabilitate housing in the city of Milwaukee. The trust fund is specifically geared toward housing for low to moderate income households, those who are homeless, and those with mental or physical disabilities.
"Economic disenfranchisement, community mental health issues, homelessness, the foreclosure crisis, and the COVID crisis are all tied together in Milwaukee -- and they have driven the need for more supportive and affordable housing," said Milwaukee Alderman Michael Murphy.
The trust fund recently received a $10 million grant from the American Rescue Plan Act. Since 2007, it has provided more than $7.9 million in grants and loans, and generated more than $1,200 housing units that would not have been created without the funding.
