Milwaukee father accused of locking kids in storage unit pleads not guilty

Milwaukee County Jail

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Two parents accused of having their six kids live in a Milwaukee storage unit are going through the court process and CBS 58 has been following their cases.

Charles Dupriest and Azyia Zielinski are both charged with child neglect.

Dupriest appeared in court virtually on Thursday, Sept. 25 for a preliminary hearing.

A Milwaukee Police Department detective testified, saying their older children were left in charge of the younger ones.

"I believe he said they had to stay in a storage unit and the had to take care of the baby when the baby cries," said the detective.

Police say the couple was found sleeping in their car in the storage unit parking lot.

Court documents show pictures of the unit with police describing the smell as "putrid."

The kids had just a bucket as a bathroom.

The oldest also said the parents often got drunk, smoke weed, and that their father "whooped" them.

Dupriest pleaded not guilty on Thursday, and a scheduling conference is set for Oct. 23, two days after Zielinski is set to appear for a status conference.

Dupriest's bond has been set at $20,000.
