Milwaukee dancer to feature in Chicago's Art Deco Nutcracker

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Rozhan Shabahang of Milwaukee will be taking the stage in the upcoming Art Deco Nutcracker, a unique ballet production by the Chicago Ballet Company. Shabahang, a Persian/Iranian dancer who grew up in Milwaukee, will be performing in the role of Clara in this year's rendition, which is set to take place at the Athenaeum Theater in Chicago.

What makes this version of the Nutcracker unique is that it aims to showcase a vivid portrayal of the classic tale, infused with the distinct atmosphere of the 1920s. Showtimes are scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 2 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

The ballet, directed by Alexei Kremnev, features roaring era costumes and a multicultural cast, highlighting the company's commitment to diversity in ballet.

Shabahang, a remote student at Northeastern University in Boston, discussed the significance of her role in a recent press release about the production, especially given the restrictions on western dance forms in her native Iran.

"Western forms of dance, including ballet, are forbidden in Iran, and in the U.S., I haven’t seen or heard of any Iranian American professional dancers," she noted. Shabahang views her participation as a way to amplify Iranian voices and spotlight their struggle for rights and freedom.

The Art Deco Nutcracker is known for blending the historic Tchaikovsky score with a fresh approach. This year's performance, apart from featuring Shabahang, includes other diverse talents, representing the company's efforts towards inclusivity and representation.

Tickets for the show range from $18.00 to $55.00, available by clicking here, offering Milwaukee residents a chance to support one of their own in Chicago.
