Milwaukee County Zoo takes active steps to keep animals safe from wildfire smoke

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- It's not just people that are dealing with the wildfire smoke the Milwaukee County Zoo is now taking action when it comes to the health of their animals.

They say that the protection of the animals is really a case-by-case situation.

Some species are naturally vulnerable to the smoke, while other individual animals are immunocompromised -- meaning they need to find shelter indoors during days like this.

"Our care staff is here 24 hours a day, so we monitor our animals 24 hours a day, and it really depends on the species," said Tracey Dolphin, director of animal management and health. "So, the care staff knows the individual animal, so they will know what to look for if that animal starts to feel unwell or just changes in behavior, it's not just a respiratory, so we would be looking for many different things."

The zoo says their apes are the most susceptible to the wildfire smoke, including gorillas and orangutans.

Those animals have been moved inside today for maximum protection.
