MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Thursday morning, members of the Milwaukee County Zoo gathered to announce the groundbreaking of a new rhino exhibit.
It's part of phase three of the "Adventure Africa" initiative.
The makeover will add an indoor and outdoor area for the rhinos and a new recreation space for hippos.
The zoo is hoping to acquire eastern black rhinos once the exhibit is complete, offering a safe new home to one of the most endangered species in the world.
"This is a long time coming, it caps off a campaign to revitalize the Milwaukee County Zoo," said Amos Morris, zoo director.
Milwaukee County has allocated more than $23 million for the development of the new exhibit, which is set to be completed in the fall of 2025.
