MILWAUKEE COUNTY (CBS 58) -- The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office has a new policy to stop enforcing ICE detainers.
It's in response to an ACLU request earlier in August.
Under the policy, deputies will no longer honor detainer requests from ICE agents to hold immigrants who would otherwise be released.
"After review by our attorneys, they made it clear that it would be appropriate to implement the new policy which I did yesterday. To do the right thing from a legal standpoint and to protect the county against liability issues," said Sheriff Richard Schmidt.
The ACLU urged Milwaukee County and other local sheriffs to stop honoring detainers because they say a person's constitutional rights are violated.
