Milwaukee County Sheriff warns public of phone scam

Milwaukee, WI – An unknown suspect has been calling Milwaukee County residents over the past several days and identifying himself as a sheriff’s deputy from the Sheriff’s Office.  The scammer advises the victims that they have an outstanding warrant or have missed jury duty and must pay a fine or face arrest.

Six people have contacted the Sheriff’s Office about receiving the calls, but none of them fell victim to the scam.  The scammer attempts to get money in person, or requests pre-paid gift or credit cards and the card numbers from the suspect over the phone.

Another version of the scam has the caller saying they are with Civil Process and asking the victim to bring cash or gift cards to another location.

The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office does not call citizens regarding jury duty, or call to threaten arrest for failure to pay fines.
