Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley says Gov. Evers' endorsement for governor came a 'little too late'
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Wisconsin is just one week away from the election and there are four Democratic candidates for governor still vying for the nomination.
Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley says while he’s grateful to have Governor Tony Evers' endorsement in the race for Wisconsin governor, Crowley admits he wishes it had come sooner.
For David Crowley, Gov. Evers' endorsement is welcome, but it’s not exactly timely.
“Look, I can be critical and say Gov. Evers’ endorsement came a little too late. I would’ve loved to have Gov. Evers' endorsement early. But this is where we are today,” said Crowley.
It's an endorsement that gives Crowley's campaign new momentum after the Milwaukee County executive exited the race for governor in early July, only to jump back in 10 days later.
“It’s about giving people as many options as possible,” said Crowley.
Currently, according to the latest Marquette Law School Poll, State Representative Francesca Hong leads the Democratic field with 38% support. Crowley sits at 7%.
Gov. Tony Evers, when asked by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel if he believed Hong could defeat Republican candidate for governor Tom Tiffany in a general election, said, "probably not."
CBS 58 reached out to Hong for comment but did not hear back.
“The governor has his own opinions, just like all of my supporters, and all the supporters of the different candidates have their own opinions,” said Crowley.
Thirty-four percent of Democratic primary voters remain undecided, but 36% of Democratic primary voters say Evers' endorsement makes them more likely to support Crowley.
“When I look at the polls, it shows that we are the leading candidate that can ultimately defeat Tom Tiffany,” said Crowley.
With just a week left before the election, Crowley says he’s focused on making his own case to Wisconsinites.
“I’m gonna be quite honest with you, man, I’m not paying attention to anyone else’s policies,” said Crowley.
The Democratic primary for governor will be held on Aug. 11.
