Milwaukee County DOT receives $220K in road safety funding in statewide effort
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Five Wisconsin communities are set to benefit from $985,718 in federal funds designated for road safety projects, courtesy of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All program.
The primary objective of the program is to assist communities in pinpointing solutions to enhance road safety locally, according to a Tuesday, Oct. 31 press release announcing the effort.
Out of the entire amount, the Milwaukee County DOT secured a grant of $219,918. The funds are earmarked for piloting street safety enhancements such as portable speed bumps and high-visibility crosswalks. Additionally, the grant will support studies aimed at shaping future action plans for the county.
Other allocations include $400,400 to the City of Beloit for a Safe Streets and Roads for All action plan and temporary bike lanes, followed by the City of La Crosse with $160,000 to formulate a safety action plan. The Oneida Nation received $100,400 for planning, while the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians were awarded $105,000 for a safety action plan on tribal roads.
Another round of Safe Streets and Roads for All awards, focusing on implementation safety improvement grants, is slated for release in December.
