Milwaukee County discloses multimillion-dollar budget error one day after election
CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) — Milwaukee County officials disclosed a multimillion-dollar budgeting error Wednesday, one day after County Executive David Crowley was elected Wisconsin's next governor.
County officials said an automated budgeting system reversed figures in two airport-related accounts, creating millions of dollars in projected savings that do not actually exist.
The error affects Milwaukee County's proposed 2027 budget, which Crowley introduced in October as a roughly $1.5 billion spending plan designed to close a projected $50 million budget gap.
County officials said they will look for other ways to account for the shortfall created by the mistake, including potential savings elsewhere in county government.
The disclosure comes one day after Crowley won Wisconsin's gubernatorial election. He will succeed Gov. Tony Evers and become the state's first Black governor.
The Milwaukee County Board is scheduled to hold its annual budget adoption meeting Thursday, Nov. 5, when supervisors are expected to vote on the 2027 county budget.
