MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee city and county leaders stood together to support cleaner air standards Friday, Feb. 16.
They're urging the Biden administration and EPS to move forward for clean car standards for model years 2027-2032.
Federal standards are currently in place for 2026.
Environmental leaders say the next round would result in nearly 67% of new car sales being electric vehicles by 2032.
Local leaders are hoping the Biden administration and EPA will adopt this standard by March.
Milwaukee's environmental sustainability program manager says the federal goals for zero emissions align with those in Milwaukee.
"We really want to quickly increase this adoption of EVs. It will help us to clean our local air, achieve greenhouse gas emissions reductions, as well as kind of boost our local economy," said Pamela Ritger de la Rosa, environmental sustainability program manager.
De la Rosa says the city's hope is for half of the cars in Milwaukee sold in 2030 to be electric vehicles.
