Milwaukee Alderman proposes resolution to make police chief an elected position

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A resolution is going to committee in Milwaukee to make the police chief an elected position.

Alderman Khalif Rainey is the lead sponsor and says the result would be a change in state law, "Time and time again we’ve seen community relations problems with the Milwaukee Police DepartmentThis  seeks to the put the power in the community’s hands while having a police chief who is ultimately beholden to the public.”

The resolution is being taken up by the Judiciary and Legislation Committee on Monday, July 2. If it passes it would direct the Department of Administration – Intergovernmental Relations Division to seek the necessary change in state statute.
