MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- As the school year gets underway, parents may have questions and concerns when it comes to the recent uptick in measles cases. 

According to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS), there are currently 110 confirmed cases of measles across the state. 

But, according to DHS, it's important to keep in mind that the impact of the measles virus stretches far beyond the symptoms of measles itself. 

"It's called this immune amnesia, and so not only does measles cause this acute illness that can be very serious with certain complications, but it also has an impact on an individual's ability to respond to other germs down the road," said Dr. Stephanie Schauer, the manager for the Wisconsin Immunization Program. 

The DHS says the measles vaccination is up to 87% effective after two doses.
