MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson took time to stress the importance of reading to kids.
Next Door Milwaukee's "Read for Children" is a month-long event promoting early childhood literacy, providing powerful reading experiences with the city's youth.
Volunteers can sign up as individuals or in groups to read with children for two-hour sessions at one of Next Door's two campuses.
Mayor Johnson gave his rendition of "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" and it was smiles all around.
Between all the students, the program has a goal of there being a combined 100,000 minutes between them all -- either at school or at home.
