MATC event offers resources to students, residents impacted by government shutdown
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- While food accessibility remains a key concern for many across our area, more hometown organizations are stepping up to help.
Milwaukee Area Technical College and the FAST Fund joined together Wednesday for an emergency community resource event.
In past years, "CommUNITY Day" has been held exclusively for MATC students. But in response to the government shutdown, the event has expanded, offering resources not only to students, but also residents across our area that have been directly impacted.
"I'm excited, not just for the students, but for the community providing a resource that's needed," said Maurice Wince, operator of Sherman Park Grocery Store. "Milwaukee has a rich history and heritage of leaning in and supporting one another, no matter anyone's decisions outside of our state. Both local government and aldermans, our mayor, our county executive and our governor has said we're gonna do this together and we're going to get through this together. We're built to last."
In addition to fresh food being handed out, local organizations such as Milwaukee Diaper Mission and Fathers Making Progress were on site to offer resources during this time of uncertainty.
