Marquette dominates Providence for season sweep

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (MARQUETTE ATHLETICS) - The Marquette women's basketball team defeated Providence 73-52 on Saturday afternoon in Rhode Island to complete the season sweep of the Friars. MU defeated PC 89-40 on Dec. 4 in Milwaukee.

Selena Lott and Jordan King tallied 14 points each to lead a group of four Golden Eagles (14-4, 11-3 BIG EAST) to reach double figures. Taylor Valladay scored 12 points off the bench to tie her career-high while Lauren Van Kleunen scored 11 points to go along with eight rebounds. Seven different Golden Eagles reached the scoring column and the team shot 50 percent (28-56) from the field.

Led by five points from Chloe Marotta, MU shot out of the gates quickly, opening the game on a 13-0 run and hitting seven of its first 10 shots from the field. Providence (6-9, 4-6 BIG EAST) responded with a 16-9 run to trim the Golden Eagles lead to just six points at 22-16 with 8:03 left in the second quarter.

In the final 7:45 of the second quarter, MU answered with a 17-6 run, building its lead to 17 points, its largest lead of the first half. The Golden Eagles shot 54.8 percent from the field and held the Friars to just 28.1 percent in the first 20 minutes of play and led 39-22 at the half.

After a back-and-forth third quarter, the Friars cut a once 20-point MU lead to 12 points with a 10-2 run to start the fourth. The Golden Eagles clamped down on defense in the final 5:29 of regulation, outscoring the Friars 14-5 on the back of 12 combined points from Jordan King and Lauren Van Kleunen.

MU held PC to 38 percent shooting and forced 17 turnovers while making over 50 percent of its shots for the seventh time this season.

Mary Baskerville led Providence with 19 points while Kyra Spiwak had 15. No other Friar scored more than six points.

POSTGAME NOTES:

-Marquette tied or won the rebounding battle for the 47th time in the 50 games of the Coach Duffy era (38 to 23 edge).

-MU shot over 50 percent from the field for the seventh time this season (7-0).

-The Golden Eagles moved to 8-0 this season when holding an opponent under 40 percent shooting from the field.

-Taylor Valladay tied a career-high with 12 points.

-Lauren Van Kleunen tallied a season-high five assists.

-Chloe Marotta hit multiple 3-pointers in a game for the first time in her career. She hit two 3-pointers Saturday.

-Jordan King (14 points) reached double figures in scoring for the ninth time this season. She also tallied eight rebounds, just one away from her career-high.

-Selena Lott (14 points) reached double figures for the 13th time this year and 46th time in her career. She also had five assists, her 30th career game with five-or-more assists.

-Lott posted a season-high five steals, tying her career-best for steals in a game (March 7, 2020 vs. Villanova).
