SLINGER, Wis. -- Legendary driver Marco Andretti did everything he could to hold off Wausau native Luke Fenhaus to grab the Superstar Racing Experience victory at Slinger Speedway. The race was broadcast live on CBS 58.
A sold out crowd of nearly 10,000 racing fans packed Slinger Speedway for tonight’s star studded event.
SRX brought some of the biggest names in racing from Tony Stewart to four time Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves to the world's fastest quarter-mile oval, but 17-year-old Luke Fenhaus stole the show.
Fenhaus was Invited to the event as a local hero to participate in the race but the 17-year-old Wausau high-schooler lead most of the way until Marco Andretti passed late to take the checkered flag.
“I think no matter where I finish today I was gonna love this track I mean it is so unique," said Andretti. "It is by far the smallest track I’ve ever been on so normally the running track as a quarter mile on foot, I’m so happy to win. It was not a popular win against their guy but I try to be as clean as possible.”
"It was a dream come true for me at such a young age," said Fenhaus. "I am honored to race with these guys for sure. I’m glad we put on a show for the fans. It was tough.“
Andretti with a late pass but Fenhaus still finishes ahead of Tony Stewart in third certainly a night that he and thousands of racing fans here in Wisconsin will never forget.
