MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A 40-year-old man was shot while in his car on State Highway 145 on Wednesday, May 3. Officials say it happened near 76th and Fond du Lac, and a motive is unknown.
"The motive, the circumstances leading up to the shooting are still being investigated- again very fluid at this point," said James Burnett, with the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office.
Officials say the victim's fatal gunshot wound is believed to have been fired from another vehicle.
Witnesses stepped up to help the victim. One of them was Keri Mack, a certified nurse who was walking her dog at the time of the shooting.
"I heard over 9 gunshots," said Mack.
Mack says she heard a woman yell for help and she quickly answered the call, giving the victim CPR.
"She just asked for help and I felt so bad," said Mack. "I felt bad that I wasn't successful. I feel so bad for her. Words can't explain."
Another good Samaritan, Willie Davis, says he got out of his car when he saw the scene. He helped pull the victim out of his car. Davis says the passenger claimed to be the victim's wife, and said the shooting was a road rage incident.
"She told me that it was road rage and somebody shot him and they kept going," Davis said. "She just said a car just randomly pulled over and started shooting and I heard it all."
Officials say they cannot confirm exactly what transpired as of yet but implore the community do to better.
"Tell your friends, tell your family, tell your loved ones there's a better way to resolve your problems that won't get you locked up for life," said Burnett.
The investigation remains ongoing.
A passenger in the victim's vehicle, a woman, was not injured.
Southbound State Highway 145 has closed temporarily as the investigation is underway.
All southbound traffic is being diverted off the highway at 107th Street.
